December 21st is the Winter Solstice, the day that marks the longest night of the year yet also signals the beginning of the lengthening of daylight. For thousands of years, cultures across the world have celebrated this day. Light is a common and powerful theme in many religions as well. The lighting of candles has become a sacred ritual woven into many spiritual traditions; the lighting of the menorah in Judaism, the lighting of the advent wreath in Christianity, the Kinara of seven candles as part of Kwanza, and the Hindu celebration of light called Divali. Consider the power of light. Martin Luther King, Jr. said,
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
